Dickens hurried into Bow Street. He had almost run all the way. He knocked on Sam’s door, and went straight in.

‘In a hurry?’ asked Jones.

‘I’ve just found out where Ruby Kiss might be — from Alexander Dalrymple.’

‘He didn’t say before.’

‘He didn’t remember until I asked him.’

‘Ah, mesmerised him, did you?’

‘No — I’m serious, Sam. We should get there as fast as we can.’

‘Where?’

‘Somewhere off Lantern Yard — that’s why —’

Jones saw the memory in Dickens’s eyes. He stood up. ‘Patience Brooke — where we found — right, let’s get up there.’ He looked at Rogers, saw that he remembered, and said, ‘Alf, you, too — get Feak, or one of the others.’
